The Mouse & Moose Series Is Back with a Whole New Character!
Herndon, VA; August 6, 2019:Mascot Books announces the release of Welcome, Otis!, written and illustrated by Laurie Ingersoll, a new book in the Mouse & Moose Adventures Series!
Ingersoll’s Welcome, Otis! is a colorful ode to an adorable bird named Otis who happens to have special needs. He is socially awkward, uncomfortable in new situations, and prone to having monumental meltdowns. He is, however, much more than his disabilities. With the help of his friends Mouse and Moose, Otis teaches all of the other animals that our differences may be what we have, but they are not who we are. Otis is funny, loving, and fun, and although his brain may be wired differently, his heart is kind and true. Like all living creatures, he just wants to be acknowledged, accepted, and loved.
Welcome, Otis! was written to teach children about special needs. Children are urged to read, discuss, and share the ways that they can relate to Otis, or anyone else who may be different. The book also includes a set of open-ended questions so young readers can have a personalized experience about how much they learned from Otis. It is designed to get children and adults thinking and talking about special needs in a way that they haven’t been able to before. It is already being used in classrooms to spark intriguing discussions with the realization that we are more alike than we are different.
The long-time writer and illustrator of the popular Mouse & Moose Adventures series, Laurie Ingersoll is delighted to introduce Otis, a character close to her heart. Ingersoll is the mother of three wonderful daughters, one of whom has special needs. The character of Otis also inspired the creation of Team Otis, an educational non-profit dedicated to promoting social and emotional literacy. The curriculum is based on all that OTIS stands for: Open-mindedness, Tolerance, Inclusion, and Social awareness.
