Why We Hatched Otis

The Otis character has been in my heart for many years and he has decided to finally make an appearance. As the mother of a child with special needs, I have often been mystified by the reactions of others when we go out in public. Children may point at her wheelchair, or seem curious about her sounds or actions, but their parents abruptly tug them away in another direction, almost scolding them for being curious. Why wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity for a teachable moment? Don’t judge, just ask!

In a world where cases of Autism, Down Syndrome and so many other diagnoses are escalating, it is more important than ever that we teach our children to be aware, accepting and kind to those who have differences. It all starts with understanding and compassion. Without exception, all living beings want to be acknowledged, accepted and loved.

Otis is the perfect fellow to represent children with special needs. He is funny, quirky, kind and unique, and has a great deal to teach us all. Yes, he has special needs, but that does not define him, he is so much more than his disabilities.

"By learning to celebrate each other's uniqueness and beautiful differences at an early age, compassion and empathy become part of our character and moral fiber."

Laurie Ingersoll

As a former Montessori teacher and mother of three, I have begun to write and illustrate the wealth of whimsical stories inside me. My first series of 7 books stars enchanting friends Mouse (a cat) and Moose (a mouse) as they help each other navigate through the days of the week. With lilting rhythm and rhyme, humor and heart, the books are a fun read with a positive empowering message: inside each of us is everything we need to be extraordinary. Written primarily for early readers, the books have a big following of all ages. The open-ended questions at the end of each story encourage reflection and promote further discussion. They are then a useful tool in the classroom, for guidance counselors and even grandparents as a catalyst for genuine dialogue.
